For every nature lover and wildlife enthusiast, Jim Corbett in Uttarakhand holds a special place in their hearts! The Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest national park of the country and it was this very region where the prestigious Project Tiger was first launched in 1973. Today, the park is not just a home to the ferocious Bengal tiger but also home to other wildlife like Asiatic elephants, leopards, etc. and nearly 650 species of domestic and migratory birds.
Spread over 500 sq km, Corbett National Park has the largest number of tigers among all national parks in India. The national park is divided into five eco-tourism zones where you can go for a safari. The regions are Dhikala zone, Durgadevi Zone, Dhela Zone, Bijrani Zone, and Jhirna Zone
The most famous of these zones in Jim Corbett is the Dhikala zone which also offers an overnight stay inside the reserve forest resthouse. It’s considered the best zone to spot tigers while you’re here on a canter (open bus) safari. Bijrani Zone is the closest to Ramnagar and offers a chance to spot tigers as well as other wildlife species. In the Jhirna Zone, the wild bears are the main attractions. If you are a birder, you should head towards Durga Devi and Dhela zones as they are known to be the jaunt of a myriad of birds in Jim Corbett. Ibisbill, Pallas’s Fish Eagle, Rosy Minivet, etc. are some of the birds commonly spotted in the area.
For all safaris, you would be accompanied with a forest guide or naturalist. You can opt for a jeep safari or canter safari, bookings for which can be done online as well as offline via hotels and tour operators in Jim Corbett. Since only a limited number of vehicles are allowed every day, it’s always advisable that you make prior bookings for your safari trip.
Apart from going on a safari in Jim Corbett, you can also explore the scenic beauty and rich heritage of Corbett. The beautiful river Kosi flowing in this region makes for a nice place for an evening stroll at sunset. You can visit the auspicious Girija Temple situated on a rock in the middle of the Kosi river. Sitabani Temple, Durga Mandir, Corbett Museum, and Corbett waterfalls are some of the places which you should add to your Jim Corbett itinerary. For adventure enthusiasts, Jim Corbett’s varied landscape also provides an opportunity to go for rappelling and rock climbing.
The best time to visit Jim Corbett National park is during the winters from December to March. Temperatures hover around 5 degree Celcius and chances of spotting the tigers and other wild animals is maximum. The monsoon months of July to September are usually devoid of tourists, so you can explore the lush green beauty of the place. During this time, you can also go for river rafting in Jim Corbett. However, do note that visiting the national park might not be feasible as it usually shuts down for tourists. Summers are hot and not ideal for visiting Jim Corbett.
